Rules and Regulations for Professional MMA

Section 1:
A. Three – Five Minute Rounds.
B. Three – Three Minutes Rounds may be allowed.
C. Five – Five Minute Rounds for Championships.
D. Extra Rounds – In the event of a tie there will be up to two extra five minute rounds with the judges attempting to declare a winner after each extra round. If even after two extra rounds a draw will be declared.
RULE 2: Fighters
Section 1:
To compete a fighter must:
A. Have current medicals that meet the Commission Requirements.
B. License
C. Demonstrate to the Promoter, skills suitable to the event
(this may be demonstrated by video or tryout/demonstration)
D. Make Weight requirement:
1. Lightweight 140 lbs – 154 lbs
2. Welterweight 155 lbs – 169 lbs
3. Middleweight 170 lbs – 184 lbs
4. Light-heavyweight 185 lbs – 204 lbs
5 Heavyweight 205 lbs – 265 lbs
6 Super -heavyweight 266 lbs and Up
RULE 3: Weigh-in
Section 1:
Fighters must weigh-in the day before the fight at a time set by the Moncton Boxing & Wrestling Commission.
Section 2:
A fighter may agree to fight an opponent who is up to 5 lbs over the weight class limit with the following concessions:
A. The overweight fighter gives 20% of his/her purse to the opponent.
B. The fighter making the weight class will be able to disallow an otherwise allowable technique to make up for the weight difference.
C. Both fighters must agree upon this technique or the fight will not happen.
RULE 4: Judging Criteria
Section 1:
Rounds are judged on a 10- point must system. There is N0 8 COUNT.
Section 2:
Rounds are judged by:
A. Strikes.
B. Strikes on the ground.
C. Take Downs.
D. Ring Control.
1. Fighters tangled in the ropes will be untangled and if necessary restarted in the centre of the ring discretion of the Referee.
2. The ropes must not interfere with ground fighting or fighters. Fighters must be protected from falling out of the ring.
E. Aggressiveness.
F. Ground control
1. A fight that is stalled on the ground will result in a standing restart. This is at the discretion of the referee.
2. A fight on the ground near the edge of the ring will be restarted in the centre of the ring in the same position. This is again at the discretion of the referee.
3. Fights that occur in a cage will not need to be restarted because of position, the cage wall can be used to pin an opponent both on the ground and standing providing the fighter doing the pinning does not grip or hold the fencing in any way.
G. Submission attempts.

RULE 5: Allowable Techniques
Section 1:
A. Punches – To legal parts of body.
B. Kicks – To legal parts of body but not to the head of down fighter.
C. Knees – To legal parts of body but not to the head of down fighter.
D. Takedowns.
E. Head butting to the body is allowed
F. Clinch Striking Are:
1. Punches.
2. Knees.
3. Kicks.
4. Foot-stomps – Not to head of down fighter.
5. Shoulder strikes.
6. Strikes
G. Elbow strikes / forearm strikes to legal part of the body.
H. No elbow strike from 12 to 6 o’clock
Section 2:
Submissions
A. Neck.
B. Shoulder.
C. Elbow.
D. Wrist.
E. Bicep.
F. Spine.
G. Hip.
H. Knee.
I. Ankle.
J. Calf.
RULE 6: Illegal Techniques
A. Hair Pulling.
B. No “Strikes” to back of head, throat, spine, back of neck, or to the V of the neck
C. Groin strikes.
D. Spine Strikes.
E. Strikes to the back of the head.
F. Strikes to the back of the neck.
G. Strikes to the throat.
H. Eye Gouging, Trachea Gouging, or Gouging of any kind.
I. Fish hooking.
J. Small joint manipulation.
K. Biting.
L. Stalling – Examples: Spitting, Mouthpiece out, Rolling out of ring.
M. Holding the Ropes.
N. Ear Pulling.
O. Holding the fence or cage to prevent a takedown.
P. Holding the fence or cage to pin an opponent.
Q. Lubricants of any kind to any part of the body.
R. No Head Butting.
S. No Holding of Gloves or Shorts.
T. Hand wrapping is permissible on hands “only”
RULE 7: Ways to Win
Section 1:
A. Knockout.
B. Tap out.
1. Physical Tap.
2. Verbal Indication.
C. Competitor Unable or Unwilling to answer bell.
Section 2:
Referee Stoppage – Due to
A. Strikes.
B. Inescapable or Damaging Submission.
C. Inability to intelligently defend oneself.
D. Unconsciousness.
E. Cut.
F. Bleeding.
G. Injury.
H. Foul.
Section 3:
Doctor Stoppage – Doctor can only recommend to referee to stop contest for reasons listed below as only referee can stop contest.
A. Cut.
B. Bleeding.
C. Injury.
Section 4:
Decision – Three Judges
A. Unanimous Decision.
B. Split Decision – Majority Rules.
C. Draw.
Section 5:
Opponent Foul Out
Section 6:
Corner Throws in the Towel (except at the discretion of the referee)
RULE 8: Fouls (Decisions on Committed Fouls)
Section 1A:
A foul may be an illegal technique, a stalling technique such as spitting out his/her mouth guard, verbal or physical abuse of officials or spectators or unsportsmanlike conduct.
1. A first minor foul results in a verbal warning.
2. Second minor foul results in a verbal warning and one-point deduction. The referee holding up his finger to each judge in turn will signal a point deduction.
3. Third minor foul results in a one-point deduction and a possible disqualification upon the discretion of the referee.
4. A first foul of significant nature may result in a verbal warning and a one-point deduction at the discretion of the referee.
Section 1B:
A competitor may lose points or be disqualified for blatant and/or aggressive and/or damaging foul. This is at the discretion of the referee and may be decided in consultation with other officials. All fouls are deemed either major or minor according to the rules and the discretion of the referee.
A. A foul may be an illegal technique, a stalling technique such as spitting his/her mouth guard, verbal or physical abuse of officials or spectators or unsportsmanlike conduct.
B. A no contest / no match will be declared if an accidental fouled fighter is unable to continue before the end of the first round.
C. If a foul fighter is unable to continue after one round is completed due to a foul the fight will go to the judges.
D. If a fighter is unable to continue due to a blatant foul the competitor delivering the foul will be disqualified, and the foul fighter will be awarded the win.
E. A fighter who is fouled may take up to five minutes recovery time.
RULE 9: Equipment
Section 1:
A. Standardized 4 oz. or more fingerless gloves.
B. Hand wraps- Maximum 2 inches wide, 2 rolls per hand. Tape is not to be applied over knuckles. HAND WRAPPING IS OPTIONAL.
C. Mouth guard.
D. Groin Cup.
E. Wrestling Shoes (optional – if wrestling shoes worn the fighter is not allowed to kick or foot stomp)
F. 20 foot x 20 foot Ring or 24 foot x 24 foot Ring or Matted surface enclosed in plastic coated mesh.
G. CORNERMAN equipment:
1. Thrombin, Avetine, Thrombin soaked pads.
2. Adrenalin 1/1000 solution, restricted for tropical haemostasis of cuts and nosebleeds only.
3. Approved medical electrolyte solution.
4. Petroleum jelly (ONLY ON LACERATIONS?CUTS AT REFEREE”S DISCRETYION)
5. Gauze pads.
6. Adhesive surgeon’s tape.
7. Clean towels.
8. Clean water.
9. Cotton swabs.
10. Ice.
11. Bandage scissors.
12. Such other items or substances.
RULE 10: Officials & Personnel
Section 1:
A. Member of the Moncton Boxing & Wrestling Commission or personnel appointed by the commission.
B. Referee.
C. Two or Three Judges (Depends upon referee judging)
D. One corner man.
E. Two assistant to the corner man.
F. Doctor(s)
G. Paramedics.
H. Ring Security.
I. Timekeeper.
RULE 10: Contingency
Section 1:
Any situation not expressly covered by the rules will by governed by the discretion of the referee.
